VERONIKA: Music-pedagogical help for the integration of children with special needs in playschools

VERONIKA is a European Project on the integration of children with special needs into mainstream education. By promoting inclusive groups through distinct music activities it emphasises "belonging" and creates a common framework of social, emotional, physical und cognitive learning. Based on particularly creative and musical approaches VERONIKA tries to support the development of the individual and communication without prejudices. The project is named after Veronika who died at the age of 5. Veronika was a girl with special needs suffering from a lethal illness. Analysing her music-pedagogical work with Veronika, Mrs. Fitzinger discovered specific interdependencies between music-pedagogical work and an improved quality of life for Veronika. Owing to successful follow-up experiences in inclusive groups she initiated the European project VERONIKA.
"VERONIKA" (Music-pedagogical tools for integration of children with special needs in playschools): the three-year project aims at developing and implementing quality standards for the integration of 3 to 6 year-old children with special needs. The integration will be professionalised through methods of music-pedagogy - linking-up of music with movements and language. The partnership includes partners from UK, FR, HU, NL, and AT.

An in-service training course will be developed in order to improve the professional qualifications of pedagogues working with the target group. The course will last 2 semesters and will be subdivided in interdisciplinary modules consisting of 400 teaching units. This course will then be delivered as an INSET course under Comenius 3.2. In addition, each partner will develop their own national version of the course taking national specificities into account. The national courses will be tested in the UK, FR and AT. They will also be evaluated and consequently reviewed. A website will be developed for dissemination and information purposes. Relevant music examples in Europe will be collected, analysed and published on a CD.

accompagnato: Bridges between music teachers’ studies and profession: a Curriculum

The starting point for the project is a course for undergrad students and professors in music education at the Institut für Musikpädagogik (Music pedagogy institute) in Vienna. The class is directed at secondary school teachers. By combining these groups, the training of teachers is newly defined: basic and vocational training, as well as continuing education are defined as development phases within the frame of "lifelong development". The course is based on forms of individual learning, on a network of practices and theoretical inputs, practical exercises of teaching and a group reflection.

The project's main activities are: a survey of the current training with regards to "lifelong development", the development of existing study curricula including forms of e-learning as well as an adaptation to the participating countries. The target group for the dissemination of the results is defined as: future teachers, music interns at the beginning of secondary level in general education schools. During the project the program is being tested by approximately 20 students from Vienna; the pedagogical material for e-learning is being tested by 20 people in the participating countries. The finished products will be integrated in the training classes of the participating countries.

We sing, we play, we know each other

The students can discover their interest for foreign languages, develop contacts, get to know other cultures and strengthen the European conscience.

During the first year, the emphasis was on athletic activities. We organized a great sports meeting and the students' results were compared among the partner schools.

During the academic year 2004/2005, we focused on the musical level. Among the project's activities were: getting to know Christmas carols from all partner countries, and learning songs and dances from the partner countries. The students showed the result of this work during a school performance entitled "In Search of the Rainbow". Additionally a brochure on Mozart and musical instruments was designed and partner schools met in Wals in October 2004 and Cyprus in May 2005.
