1

How can children get to know the European traditions? An intercultural approach to the European dimension by means of the myths and legends

The project plans to introduce children to European traditions by getting to know the artwork, the stories and legends as well as the music of the three participating countries. The project’s interdisciplinary character nurtures the children’s tolerance. Also, its interculturalism advances and enhances the children’s sensitivity for the traditions of other countries.
At first, the personal references in relation to one’s own culture are being analysed. These are then compared to those of the other countries. From this emerges the acceptance of different cultures and values, a cultural plurality without a hierarchy in values.

After one year, pedagogical material is compiled, a handbook is edited, and a video and audio recording is made.

INAS: Interactive Art for Schools and neighbourhood

This one-year intercultural education project aims at promoting tolerance and mutual understanding in communities with large linguistic and socio-cultural minorities, thereby contributing to combat racism and xenophobia through the promotion of innovative pedagogical approaches, methods and practices at school level. Arts and art education are used as a bridge to re-establish communication between school and local community and to strengthen the sense of common ground and interest.
The final product is an instrument that stipulates a systematic approach and tools to detect and analyse the diversity of environment in the learning process. The final outcome is an increased intercultural competence of pupils through pedagogical methods, curriculum contents and policy at local level. The project also encourages the development of active citizenship by promoting mutual understanding. Its long-term objective is to enhance the interaction between schools and neighbourhood and to diminish segregation. For this, the project uses different approaches of interacting with the neighbourhood through art-activities (art, drama, literature, folk dance, and music). Artistic orientation is not a sole goal, but rather used as a means to approach and handle the social and cultural diversity in a creative way. Each school would consign an artist or artists to devise smaller scale tryouts, out of which the school can select the concept it intends to elaborate further. The implementation is a systematic process based on an a priori model, which would be tested and fine-tuned during the project. Interactive learning methods and workshops are seen as the most suitable approach to interculturalisation.
The target groups are schools, teachers and local administration.
The final products were exhibitions, performances, and writings. A booklet was published in English.
