European Songs - Music and Pictures

The aim of the project is to introduce art from various countries with a focus on musical and fine arts. Together we will create a mosaic of songs and pictures that will introduce the individual culture of each country participating in the project. The project outcomes will consist of an exhibition, a songbook with illustrated folk songs, a calendar and a book with own stories and illustrations of learners.

Music and Traditions in Europe

The project "Music and Traditions in Europe" aims at creating intercultural dialogue not only through recognition of musical and cultural traditions of a partner country, but also through recognition of its native language. In our case those languages are Portuguese and Czech.

Students are asked to record a bilingual CD with folk and Christmas songs of both countries and to create a bilingual songbook to make the lyrics available for listeners from both countries. The translation from Czech to Portuguese and vice versa is facilitated by English as an operational language. Nevertheless some puns in humorous folk songs are really difficult for students to translate. Collective cooperation, tolerance, understanding and responsibility for the assigned tasks of all participants involved are the warrantees of the project's success. Throughout the year students have a chance to discover the beauty of folk music, traditions and customs (non-traditional musical instruments, concerts, Christmas traditions, carnivals and their wonderful atmosphere, decoration, and national cuisine) and wonders of nature, to get to know different educational systems and teaching methods in schools, to familiarise themselves with the conditions of Czech agriculture and with the village life.

Cultural roots in movement

The project intends to work with educational approaches and organizations in different types of European art schools that have similar goals and structures.
Getting to know the cultural roots of each partner through music and dance education and trying to address how the different cultural roots can be applied and exploited for artistic educational purposes is at the core of the project. It will investigate methodologies, educational materials, and techniques, and take the organisation of lesson plans, as well as the students' age and skills into consideration.
The participation of the students in this project helps to see the methods of teaching in action and gives students the opportunity to study and perform some carefully chosen compositions that represent the culture of each participating country.
The collaboration is mostly based on communication especially via Internet and on exchanging scores, CDs, videos, DVDs, views on interpretation, etc. There are also some project meetings and study visits. During these transnational activities there is a possibility to perform concerts with students. The communication via email is based on compiled lists of songs and compositions according to the topic of the project and to the subject of schooling (violin, piano, recorder, flute, clarinet, chamber music, orchestra, solfeggio and music theory, children’s choir, dance and others).
