EUROFOLK – Cue! Lights! Go!

We worked on the project Eurofolk for three years: in 2003/04 - Roots, 2004/05 - Discrimination, 2005/06 - Cue! Lights! Go!

Last year, we worked on selected legends with elements of discrimination. They were sent around to the partner schools the previous year. We chose the Maltese legend. After translation, students wrote the script in English and Polish. They chose music, made decoration and costumes. Our legend was prepared by Slovenian students. In May 2006 we all met at the Festival of Plays in Italy. We performed our plays there and had the opportunity to present things we had done together. The materials were displayed on the specially prepared places. We also hosted teachers from Malta, Slovenia and Italy. Our students took part in language-theatrical activities conducted by the teacher, actor and director from Malta, Mr. John Suda. They also participated in presentation about Slovenia and Art classes with Slovenian teachers.

Nature as the source of inspiration for children's play

The second year of the project was started by collecting songs, dances and lively dances. As a part of the project miming and music classes were given outside and inside the classrooms. The classes developed the musical and miming expression of the children while also developing their imagination and musical ear. The children got to know many musical instruments, learnt how to play them and express different moods through them. In the classrooms were music corners where the children could use the instruments. The children also made instruments by using natural materials. During the project we introduced new ways of working with the children: "Miming with music" and "Meeting with music". Giving regularly miming and music classes resulted in a natural need for movement and beauty of movement in our children.

We get to know legends, fairy tales and songs of our European friends

This project aims at awaking an understanding for cultural traditions of other countries. This should initiate and consolidate a positive attitude toward other countries. By dealing with the fairy tales, legends and songs of the partner countries and comparing them to their own, the children become familiar with and learn to appreciate the partner cities and schools. Thus, knowledge about and understanding for different life situations and tolerance for others are being created. The project stimulates and strengthens relationships between students of different European countries. Throughout the project, the students introduce themselves to each other by describing their school situation and giving insight into their spare time activities. The fairy tales, legends and songs remain at the centre of the project, though. The schools exchange stories, reports, pictures and songs and publish them.

You and Us

In the project's second year, the collaborative study extended to musical cultures, the architectural styles of buildings, and regional food. The schools sent their partners 3 examples of their musical culture including one traditional / folk song, a classical or operatic piece of music and a modern song. The words, musical notation and a CD were sent to the project partners. For architecture, the schools sent partners some examples of houses / buildings both historical and modern and including one church / religious building. These were included in a digital presentation with explanatory notes in English for each. Regarding nutrition, 3 examples of traditional foods/ dishes were sent including a video-recording of one dish (digitally captured onto CD or by analogue video-cassette). Explanatory nutritional notes and cooking instructions were sent with the intention being that they would try out the dishes of their project partners.

Exploring the poetry, song and story of contrasting European regions

The project started in 2004/05. There are 4 school partners in it – Polish, English (coordinator), Spanish and French. The main objective of the project is to explore and exchange ideas about the similarities and differences of writing stories, poetry and songs within the European regions included in this project. Poetry and song act as a ‘tool’ to enable children to understand cultural and regional differences. They also allow a wider range of modes to communicate information (writing, drama, singing etc). Other aims are developing greater understanding of the European regions in this project by means of studying poetry, songs and stories, developing effective ways of communication between cultures, facilitating pupils' ability to understand differences in European cultures, developing pupils' skills to use e-mail and internet technologies, motivating teachers, pupils and parents to increase the number and the ability level of the foreign languages they speak.

Trip of harmonies among the notes of the history

The project enhances the pupils' knowledge about music, as far as its historical, cultural and environmental tradition are concerned. The aim of the project is to encourage the development of the pupils' national identity, opening them to other cultures and creating a tolerant attitude towards other people. The project practices skills of communicating in English and using modern information technology as tools of communication, documentation and searching information. It gives the opportunity to exchange experiences among teachers and pupils of partner schools and to apply active methods of teaching. Pupils get to know traditional songs and dances of their region and country, and compose musical motifs based on emotional stimulus, visualisation or imagination. They also get acquainted with the entwining music traditions of Europe.

Culture Station

The project is named Culture Station and realised by the students from the Opalenica Comprehensive School and the partner schools from Vilnius, Tallinn and Riga. The project was completed by the end of 2006/07. The main topic of the project was divided into three sub-topics which were worked on within three years of the project: Architecture, sculpture and painting; Traditions and customs - religious, national and school; Music and dance. While working on the project the students had a chance to broaden their horizons, develop their hobbies and artistic skills and work on their own positions connected with the discipline. The aim of the project is to develop students' awareness of cultural heritage and its abundance. Moreover the youth involved in the project have an opportunity to get to know the culture of partner countries, which helps towards developing respect and tolerance for others. All this heads towards openness to universal values needed in a united and safe Europe.

Tradition- Culture- Folklore- similarities and differences between our countries

The school project is intended as a continuation of an international cooperation between European countries (France, Greece, Spain , Poland). It has been mainly concentrated on subjects as: culture, tradition and folklore. Certain stages of our cooperation contain: dance, musical instruments, costumes, gastronomy, theatre, history of our towns, decorations and customs. The cooperation is bound to motivate pupils to actively search information from different sources (Internet, newspapers, books, conversation) and to research as much as they can about the partner countries. They also become more creative in the way of artistic matter. By learning about other countries, students become more aware of the value of their own culture. Finding differences and similarities makes them more tolerant, but most importantly they discover to use their language knowledge and make them more creative.

Message to the Future

The project is devoted to the national cultures of the partner countries. During the first year pupils worked on legends which are the source of knowledge about the past. The final product is a leaflet including 12 legends in their original and new versions together with translations and illustrations. The next phase of the project focused on the present. Each school chose songs for the partners. Pupils learnt to sing the songs and created dances for the songs. The result of this stage is a CD with songs and a film with dances. During the third year of the project children will try to set up a shared culture of an imaginary country, based on the different cultural aspects they learnt from each other. They will prepare a “surprise-box” presenting the common European culture which will be sent to “the future”. The aim of the project is to teach children to communicate with people from different countries by means of music, dance and pictures.

Building a better Europe, by sharing experiences about our different cultures and environments

Our project aims to give children an opportunity to study five contrasting cultures on their own. During the first year, the pupils concentrate on exchanging information about their schools and lifestyles. In the second year the project is extended to exchanging five national songs/stories within the group and learn all of them in our own schools. The activities include singing, artwork, story-telling and drama. The story/song is recorded and shared within the groups. For the final year a video of playground games is made to learn each others' games. Structuring the programme in this way gives the students in all participating schools an opportunity to develop a good knowledge about other children, their schools, national stories/songs and playground games which should be greatly beneficial to their understanding of other cultures and traditions.

Sport In and Out of School - National Games and Dances

The project "Sport In and Out of School - National Games and Dances" is a joint undertaking of Primary School No 8 and French school College Sainte Marie Saint Jean Baptiste in Royan. The first aim of our project is to make the pupils more open to Europe. They use English to communicate with their partners. The need to use English helps them understand how useful this language is and motivates them to learn it. The second feature of the project is education through sports where the participants get to know culture and customs of the partner country carrying out research on national sports, games, and dances. The project promotes athletic values such as fair play and tolerance. The most important final products of our project are: a calendar with descriptions of national sports, games and dances published in English and the native languages and a film presenting the pupils' involvement in sports competitions and dancing performances.

To know different European countries through their tradition and customs

The main idea of this project is to know and value traditions and customs of each participating country. Among other things, we want to learn about traditions, songs, dances, games, legends, and dishes, and share them with the other partner schools. In this way we will educate ourselves and the children to respect different cultures, European diversity and the new multicultural society. One of the principal goals is to create friendship and mutual respect between students from different parts of Europe in order to educate new European citizens. Since we live in a society that demands the use of new communication technologies, we would like to use them as much as possible. The project includes activities such as organising a video-meeting, correspondence through e-mail and creating DVD-presentations or videos.

The Theatre as Bridge between Nations

During the first part of the project students get familiar with their partners (Austria, Italy, Greece, Poland ). Then every school uses their knowledge about theatre in their classrooms. Students become familiar with the history of theatre in particular countries. The students gain theoretical knowledge and are working in workshops. The workshops cover various aspects of artistic activities – songs, dances, and theatre. They will be held during the students' exchange visits. The students will be divided into smaller groups from different countries and will be working on the foreign languages as well as taking part in classes run by professional actors. Every school works on problems of racism: they use their knowledge to write a script and prepare a play on the basis of the script. Students write the script on their own, prepare costumes and props. Every school's result will be presented during the students’ exchanges. The spectacles will be very important for the cultural life of the schools and cities.

Beauty through difference

The aim of the project is a co-operation among schools titled 'Beauty through difference'. An essential part of the project consists in co-operation and integration as understanding cultural similarities and differences. At the end of the first year each school is to prepare a calendar illustrated with students' artworks. The income of selling artworks will be appropriated for the needs of disabled students. An artwork display is going to be organised to which parents, local citizens and authorities will be invited. In the second year of the project, students will be writing lyrics and compose the music to a song titled 'Beauty through difference'. The song will be presented during the school concert, which will be recorded and sent to partner schools. The third year is devoted to the preparation of a school performance titled 'Beauty through difference' using dance and music. Students will be encouraged to make the scenery.

Human voice and body are the best instruments

The intention of the project is to spur the students to enhance European identity in a united Europe. The aim is reached by means of studying national traditions and histories of the partner countries. A part of the project touches upon the reality of the Holocaust; it is the memory expressed through various artistic forms, most of all in music. The project is realised through the exchanging of documents, information, reports, regular contacts among partner schools as well as the work in groups. The outcomes of the project are as follows: plays, workshops, seminars, and work displays including cultural elements taken from partner schools. The project contains a variety of teaching programmes and uses modern technology. Participation in the project enables better social and cultural adaptation of national minorities as well as overcoming historical, cultural, ethnical and racial misunderstandings and prejudices, frequently the outcome of xenophobia.

The cultural heritage of Greece and Poland through dances and dietary habits

The aim of the Polish-Greek project was getting to know the cultural heritage, customs, eating habits, dancing and exchanging everyday experience. To realise this aim the Greek students paid an educational visit to Bydgoszcz during which they were given the chance to explore the city, go to the opera, learn Polish traditional dances in Palac Młodzieży, and visit Toruń, Gdańsk, Malbork, and Biskupin. They were hosted by Polish families during the Easter season which made them experience Polish traditional food and customs. During the visit of the Polish group in Patras, we visited The Ancient Olympia, the forest of Strofylia, Galaxidi, Nafplio, Kalavrita, and many places in Patras. We had dinner in a tavern, danced Greek dances, visited Greek schools and churches, and exchanged views on educational systems. The final products of the project are photo albums, CDs with photographs, CD-ROMs and leaflets.

Establishing creative international art links (special)

Throughout the project we develop artwork in our own schools to share our lives, countries and cultures with our partners. The work will be sent around electronically and by mail. Our project is connected to children's work. During the project we want to realise different kinds of children's work. Year 1 – “Ourselves and our calendar”: This takes a variety of forms including poetry, music and drama. In the first year we share different artwork that tells the children in the partner schools about “ourselves, our school, our region and our culture”. We also illustrated stories or used songs to further enrich what we were sharing. This was done throughout the course of the year and was influenced by our “calendar” – e.g. autumn, winter, spring and summer events, stories, weather.

National and traditional transmission through art, dance and traditional music instruments

"Through Europe with folk music, dance and art". We will start our journey, which is to explore traditional art and music, proposing children and other people from their environment such tunes that reveal the features of our culture in a European dimension. We hope for a fascinating journey that will bring us a lot of new experiences and adventures and will teach us a lot. Foreign languages and the newest technology will help schools from Poland, Hungary, and Romania to communicate easily and to exchange their knowledge. While participating in this extraordinary journey a group of students will have a chance to share their experiences with each other and this way the number of "passengers" will increase.

Culture, traditions and customs of our region

- Kultura, tradycje i zwyczaje naszego regionu

Our project named "Culture, tradition and habits of our region" involves cognition of the region's and the partner regions' cultural heritage. The aim of the project is to create a space for learners, that gives them an opportunity to acquaint themselves with other countries' cultures as well as to be educated towards universal values through mutual contacts, to learn to be able to understand each other despite cultural and language differences among particular nations. By means of collectively done tasks and shared information we will build tolerance and appreciation of other cultures. This project is designed for three years. In the first year of the project we will deal with customs and traditions in our schools and in neighbouring schools. The second year will focus on other interesting places and history. In the third year we will deal with the regions we live in. The topics mentioned will be developed in history, Polish and English language, music, arts and crafts and other lessons as well as within an activity of the children's folk group "Mali Porębianie". The parents' committee, the local cultural centre, the municipality and other institutions will also be involved in the project. The project will end with a joint presentation of the partner schools, presentation of movies about our region's customs and traditions (CD, video), thematic lectures, posters, albums and various other products. We will present the outcome of our work in the school magazine, in the local press, radio and television, as well as electronically. We hope that the experience and skills gained during the realisation of the project Socrates Comenius will have lasting fruit.

Together we live in a European school class - Zyjemy razem w europejskiej klasie szkolnej

The project aims at our students, their parents and the wider society's knowledge of culture and lifestyle of people coming from other countries. The project tries to help unify the EU countries' peoples. The object of the project is to get information about the culture and environment of four partner schools by means of an exhibition organized in every school during the school year. The exhibition will consist of photos, drawings, written papers about the lives of pupils, and will present the traditions and cultures of each district. Another important form of being acquainted with the environment and direction of partner schools will be through folk dances, songs and fairy tales. By realising the project we want to develop cultural and social competences of our students, teaching them how to use contemporary communication and information technologies as well as motivating them to study foreign languages. The European group's (class) developing of cultural competences in daily life is not focused on students' activities only, but also invites parents and the general public to develop a culture as such. The schools' cultural competences will play an important role in developing tolerance, openness in meeting people from various nationalities, and will also carry a protective function against pathological danger and xenophobia. A special part of the project will include presentations of its creations on an international level with a positive impact on pupils, teachers and the wider society today and in the future.

The Lost Message Visualised Through E-learning

Europe consists of many unique cultures. We are afraid that this uniqueness will be lost. That is why the aim of our project is to raise the awareness of the present generation on the cultural diversity of Europe. We would like to: - Identify the national / regional legends, fairy tales, music, customs, etc. - Exchange regional information among partner schools to produce visual materials e.g. newsletter, calendar, brochure, website and DVD (the material gathered by the pupils will be collated to provide teachers with a resource book) - Develop a virtual business enterprise activity in which the partner schools will use the information to manufacture a range of materials for use by the school and the community.

Musicians, songs and dances from Poland and Hungary

The project focuses on getting to know the European cultural history from Poland and Hungary. During the project the children learn about two great musicians - Stanislawa Moniuszki und Zoltán Kodály.

Additionally, the students study songs, regional and national dances and improve their language skills. The student exchange, the exchanging of experiences and the working on final products serve to develop a good attitude of young Europeans to openly embrace the cultural heritage of Europe and be tolerant and without prejudices. Thanks to the project, the children can deepen their interest in subjects such as music, art, informatics and German. In this case, music is the key to getting to know the culture, customs and traditions of Hungarians and Polish. The topic motivates and allows to improve skills in the German language and basic knowledge of Hungarian and Polish.

Traditional Music: the Common and the Different in the European Identities

Every year students are going to collect traditional songs from their region. Then they have to translate them into English, analyse them, write down the music and sing them in a concert. Every year there will be a different topic. In the first year - work, second - leisure time, third - men and women. The main aims of the project are: establishing relationships among students by exchanging e-mails, getting to know the partner countries better and improving English skills. At the end of every year there will be a concert during which students will present the chosen songs. Local representatives as well as the press will be invited to the concerts. All the information about the project and the final products will be available on the website www.traditionalsongs.eu.

Cultural elements, folk dance and music

The aim of the project is to share the different aspects of the culture where it is possible to discover the common European roots. We would like to promote the international integration through the usage of the TIC and the English language. The theme 'Cultural elements, folk dance and music" will be developed in three years. 1st Year: researches about history, culture, local tradition and legends; visiting some historical places; 2nd Year: researches focused on local food, traditional clothes, dances and folk music; 3rd Year: knowing some civic and religious ceremonies and celebrations. Thanks to this project we hope to prove that, we, Europeans, have many things in common and we compose a very beautiful picture. And each difference between us is only one of the main colours which present a rainbow in a harmony.

Common points of different cultures through music and musical instruments

There are four countries participating in the project "Common points of different cultures through music and musical instruments": Greece (the coordinating school), Poland, Turkey and Spain. The aim of the project is to widen one's knowledge about musical traditions of the students' own country, as well as the other countries taking part in the project. The other objective is to identify the common points of these cultures and analyse the source of such similarities. During the course of the project, students get to know the musical traditions of their country and the region where they live. They go to different concerts, take part in musical events, get familiar with regional cultural centres, local music and dance groups, and choirs. Students also make musical instruments, prepare multimedia presentations, and create a webpage. During visits to other countries, the students have a chance to get to know the culture and customs of the participating countries, and also develop their language skills.

Why don't we stay children forever? - building knowledge of Polish and Hungarian children's literature, songs and games

- Zostańmy dziecmi na zawsze - poznanie literatury, piosenek i gier dzieciecych Polski i Węgier

Polish and Hungarian learners will work out and present materials concerning the life of children in both countries. They will acquire knowledge of different kinds of children's literature, songs and games and will compare what a school year looks like in the other country. Thanks to common work on particular tasks in everyday activities, they will teach their age groups everything what they have learned. By monitoring historical events present in literature and learning songs and games, the learners discover the shared history and culture of both nations. Together they will work on performances, prepare their instruments and decoration, sing songs, and create albums and dictionaries. By developing their language skills and learning how to solve their problems, the pupils build a bridge of mutual respect and acceptance.

Closer to each other - Bliżej Siebie

The project acts as a cooperation between schools dealing with mentally handicapped children. Three special schools participate in it – one is integrated, the others are public. The aim of the project is to share experiences among teachers and therapists of various countries and types of schools.

During the project learners will have an opportunity to learn about partner countries and the children there. We want to develop their knowledge of other cultures and their lifestyle through songs and dances, and to support the children's interest in other countries. We will realise the goals of the project by exchanging information among pupils and teachers via letters and emails, as well as by creating a shared internet domain including a gallery of works and creations by handicapped children. We also want to produce videos about our schools and present them to our partners. Additionally, our cooperation will be based on meetings during which we can compare various methods of working with handicapped children, and share our experiences to increase the quality of our work. We believe that the project outcome will serve both pupils and teachers at these schools.

Dancing through Europe - Tanecznym krokiem przez Europę

The project is based on learning and understanding different ceremonies and customs of musical and dance culture which are characteristic for particular nations as well as for local and regional culture. Children in mixed groups, from 7 to 13 years old, will present and mutually discover the genesis of selected national, regional and local dances. The core of the whole project is »breaking« cultural and language barriers for project participants by means of dancing and singing, as well as emphasizing common European roots. In each year of the project, the partners will choose and present two dances with singings: a first dance typical for the town the students come from, and a second dance characteristic for that region. The selected dances and singings will remain in their original (authentic) form or will be translated to the language understandable to other countries by:

- live presentation of dances and singings by the children, or recordings in the form of MG and video,

- artworks consisting of drawings, photos, posters, albums, documentation of project work.

The prevalent aim of the project is getting to know the history and cultural heritage of the partners, understanding various other nations' cultural manifestations as well as increasing the motivation towards mastering languages and developing professional competences. Another aim of the project is understanding and mutual appreciation among people and nations.

Exploring our cultures through dance

The project made us introduce new, particular form of school activities. Now our pupils realise the important roles dance and music play as a way of communicating with others and developing our cooperation with other schools. Our pupils from class I to III have learnt how to dance "krakowiak", while pupils of classes IV to VI have learnt basic steps of "polonez". They have also created some works dedicated to dances specific to our partner countries. We have prepared a dictionary containing words in the partner schools' languages. In addition, we have started exchanging mails with pupils from partner schools. Our pupils have gathered a huge amount of new experiences, useful in daily life such as: communicating in English, developing their ability to think creatively, and the ability to dance.
