Coloured Umbrella: To link cultural diversities together through creative methods

This is a three year-long project intended to develop tolerance and mutual understanding among children from different linguistic and socio-cultural backgrounds and origins through psycho-pedagogical programmes that promote intercultural integration and work against racism and xenophobia in schools.
The activities of the project will be centred on: 1) work with small groups of children from different cultures, using themes that relate to emotions using expressive and creative tools that have a therapeutic function such as painting, drama and music, 2) to proceed from children's literature and co-operation games to develop an attitude of intercultural dialogue, understanding of social problems and to explore the related messages and codes. Dramatization of different stories and different characters using music and expression of body language to make the children reproduce their feelings about what the stories mean to them and change competitive games into co-operation games, producing entertaining situations and wellbeing where relations of equality and diversity trust are growing. The target public of the project are the pupils of migrants, refugees and Resandefolket/Roma families of pre-school and primary school levels.

2

A musical to bridge different cultures

At first the project allowed students and teachers to get to know each other by exchanging e-mails concerning personal information, one’s own school systems and cultural backgrounds, with particular reference to traditional music.

From the preparatory visit "emigration" emerged as a theme of common interest, so the students started to work on a story which was to be the script of the musical; they were given some guidelines to work on and there was a competition from which the best story was selected.

Once the script was written (by the end of the 1st year), teachers and students started experimenting with writing music and lyrics. The pupils helped each other by keeping in touch via Web-meetings, chat-lines, e-mails. They wrote music and sent it to each other in midi-files and sheet form. That gave them the opportunity to arrange the songs, exchange ideas, discuss technical problems and details concerning costumes, scenes etc.

At the end of the second year each country performed their own musical, mainly in their own languages, which was recorded in order to show it to the other partners. As a final product an international performance was staged involving representatives from each school, which combined different music styles (and languages) and was recorded on DVDs which also includes a documentary section showing what happened off-stage and shows the expectations and impressions of the participating students and teachers.

The project was constantly monitored and evaluated through project meetings, back-ups, questionnaires, etc.
