Richard Jones was born in Abergavenny and was educated in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Newtown, Powys. He started playing the trumpet at the age of eleven. A graduate of York University where he studied music education with John Paynter, conducting with Graham Treacher and for a short time Trumpet with John Wallace and UCNW Bangor. In 1997 Richard completed an MA in Applied Educational Studies, also at York, which focused on the impact of extra - curricular music on students and parents. He gained the NPQH qualification in 2003

 

The bulk of Richard Jones’ work in the classroom has been at Richmond School, a very large rural comprehensive school in North Yorkshire. As well as sending a constant stream of young musicians in to the music profession and teaching world Richard is renowned for his work with school wind bands world wide

 

Under the baton of Richard Jones the Richmond School Wind Band was described in WINDS as, " one of our most respected ensembles " and the band programme became one of the most innovative in the UK with a series of nine  commissioned works by British composer all premiered at the Conferences of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles ( BASBWE)  where successive bands also had the privilege to work with such maestri as Reynish, Croft, Battisti, Rundell, Renton , Stamp and Boysen Jnr.

 

In terms of Festival success the Band appeared five times on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall, London in the National Festival of Music for Youth (NFMY) and also six times at the National Finals of the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF)

 

The Swing Band too has received National accolades in the NCBF and NFMY and was invited to take part in the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Competition Gala Concert.

 

 

 

 

 

Richard was a member of the National Executive of BASBWE and received two scholarships, sponsored by the Neil A Kjos Music Company, to attend the Mid West Conference in Chicago in recognition of his “significant achievement and potential to influence the world of school ensemble music making”. He was Artistic Director of the highly successful and innovative BASBWE Conference at Huddersfield University. A regular contributor to Winds he has been a member of the editorial board.

 

As an adjudicator he has worked for the NCBF at Regional and National level, at the Gower International Band Festival in Valkenburg and in Canada and the USA for Classic Festivals and in Melbourne, Australia for the Melbourne Schools’ Music Festival and for Yorkshire Television in their series “ Battle of the Bands “. In 1998 he also pioneered the adjudication methods used in the NCBF at the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and also adjudicated in the National Festival of Music for Youth for the first time.

 

As a clinician Richard has led sessions on conducting and rehearsal methods, guest conducted and organised repertoire sessions on behalf of the BASBWE Education Trust. He was invited to lecture at the First Mid - European Band Conference in Schladming, <st1:country-region>Austria</st1:country-region> in July 1998, in 1999 gave two lectures at the Illinois All State Music Education Conference and in 2003 developed the schools strand at the WASBE Conference in Jonkoping, <st1:country-region>Sweden</st1:country-region>

 

In September 2000 he took over the baton of the Richmondshire Orchestras, one of the few community orchestras in the North of England. Since then he has developed the orchestra in terms of numbers, confidence and expertise. Their last concert included Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and brought this review. “This symphony is full of pitfalls for orchestra and conductor alike. Richard Jones conducted with aplomb.”

 

In September 2005 Richard became the National Specialism Coordinator for Music and Performing Arts for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. In this role he is contact with schools throughout <st1:country-region>England</st1:country-region> identifying and disseminating good practice and liaising with every sphere Music Education in the <st1:country-region>UK</st1:country-region> and beyond!

 

He is married with two children and when time allows from all his musical activities enjoys a vigorous game of hockey and falling down ski slopes!
