Under the baton of Richard Jones the Richmond School Wind Band was described in WINDS as, " one of our most respected ensembles " and the band programme became one of the most innovative in the UK with a series of nine commissioned works by British composer all premiered at the Conferences of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles ( BASBWE) where successive bands also had the privilege to work with such maestri as Reynish, Croft, Battisti, Rundell, Renton , Stamp and Boysen Jnr.
In terms of Festival success the Band appeared five times on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall, London in the National Festival of Music for Youth (NFMY) and also six times at the National Finals of the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF)
The Swing Band too has received National accolades in the NCBF and NFMY and was invited to take part in the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Competition Gala Concert.
Richard was a member of the National Executive of BASBWE and received two scholarships, sponsored by the Neil A Kjos Music Company, to attend the Mid West Conference in
As an adjudicator he has worked for the NCBF at Regional and National level, at the Gower International Band Festival in Valkenburg and in Canada and the USA for Classic Festivals and in Melbourne, Australia for the Melbourne Schools’ Music Festival and for Yorkshire Television in their series “ Battle of the Bands “. In 1998 he also pioneered the adjudication methods used in the NCBF at the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and also adjudicated in the National Festival of Music for Youth for the first time.
As a clinician Richard has led sessions on conducting and rehearsal methods, guest conducted and organised repertoire sessions on behalf of the BASBWE Education Trust. He was invited to lecture at the First Mid - European Band Conference in
In September 2000 he took over the baton of the Richmondshire Orchestras, one of the few community orchestras in the North of England. Since then he has developed the orchestra in terms of numbers, confidence and expertise. Their last concert included Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and brought this review. “This symphony is full of pitfalls for orchestra and conductor alike. Richard Jones conducted with aplomb.”
